Facts about Bed Bugs
Bed Bug ( Cimex lecturarius)
The bed bug is found worldwide and throughout Britain. Bed bugs are found in various locations where their human hosts sleep, such as within homes, hotels and dormitories, as well as less common locations such as night trains, taxis and second-hand furniture. Since the 1990s, there has been an increase in bed bug infestations, largely attributed to international travel and the pest’s ability to hitchhike. Additionally, Bed Bugs naturally disperse as the females seek refuge from males following mating. The bed bug is associated with human habitation, hiding in furniture and structural cracks and crevices, emerging at night when hungry to search for blood meals.
The Bed bug is a nocturnal parasite, all stages feeding on mammalian blood, principally humans but also dogs, cats or rodents. Bed bugs hide by day in crevices in beds, furniture, wallpaper, and skirting boards and emerge when hungry, usually every few days, to feed.
How Bed Bugs Impact Humans
While Bed Bugs are not known to be frequent carrier of disease, their bites may cause severe allergic reaction and unpleasant irritation, showing up on skin as itchy red bumps as they feed on human and animal blood. Bedbug infestations are often, but not exclusively, associated with poorer housing where bed bugs are transferred on second hand furniture and bedding. Also, lodging houses, hostels, hotels.
Bed Bugs may be carried on luggage or clothes, making it incredibly easy for the infestation to find its way into our homes. That’s why it is important for the public to have the information to protect their homes and businesses against bedbugs.
Heavy bedbug infestations are characterised by a distinctive odour. There is also some suggestion that Bed Bugs may be partly responsible for the lowering of social standards in an area of infested housing, where some householders are tempted to move away from the area to avoid the trouble and stigma.
Bed bugs are difficult to control. Below is a summary of the main reasons we need skilled Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to effectively detect and treat bedbug infestations:
- BED BUGS ARE FOUND IN HIDDEN HARBOURAGE SITES
Bed bugs hide in the cracks and crevices of various locations, primarily in the bedroom. Common hiding spots include the mattress and bedframe, bed side table, chairs, loose skirting, and behind loose wallpaper. These concealed locations make locating their resting sites and delivering treatment both time-consuming and difficult to achieve.
- BED BUGS CAN SURVIVE PROLONGED PERIODS WITHOUT A BLOOD MEAL
An adult bed bug can consume approximately 10mgs of blood, which is double its body weight. This allows bed bugs to survive for several months without feeding, and they can survive up to one year in cooler conditions. Consequently, leaving a property or room vacant for an extended period is not a viable control strategy.
- ALL ACTIVE BED BUG LIFESTAGES AND BOTH SEXES FEED ON BLOOD
Unlike many other blood-feeding pests such as mosquitoes, both male and female bed bugs as well as their nymphs all feed on blood. The nymphs are very small: a first instar nymph is measuring around 1.5 mm. Their tiny size, combined with their ability to harbour in concealed crevices, makes direct contact treatment contact challenging.
- BED BUGS HAVE THE ABILITY TO HITCHHIKE AND RE-LOCATE
Bed bugs are found in various locations where their human hosts sleep, such as within homes, hotels and dormitories, as well as less common locations such as night trains, taxis and second-hand furniture. Since the 1990s, there has been an increase in bed bug infestations, largely attributed to international travel and the pest’s ability to hitchhike. Additionally, Bed Bugs naturally disperse as the females seek refuge from males following mating.
- BED BUGS CAN BUILD RESISTANCE TO PESTICIDES
The chemical methods used to control bed bugs are being challenged due to an increase in bed bugs that have developed resistance to insecticides, coupled with the pressure to reduce the amount of chemicals going into the environment. Bed bugs can develop resistance not only to pyrethroid insecticides but also to combination pyrethroid-neonicotinoid insecticide products in as little as one generation under lab conditions. However, evolving such resistance comes with a “cost” to the bed bug, which can result in reduced fitness, lower egg production, and reduced lifespan. This means that resistance to insecticides is unlikely to be maintained through bed bug generations so long as careful resistance management practices are used.
- LACK OF EARLY BED BUG IDENTIFICATION
A single pregnant female bed bug can lead to an infestation of several thousand within 6 months. Therefore, early bed bug detection and treatment of infestations, particularly in closely situated housing, are crucial for containing their populations. Unfortunately, this process can be slow due to residents’ lack of awareness regarding the signs of a bed bug infestation, such as blood spots on the sheets and the presence of bites. Many people don’t react to bed bug bites as a fact, and since bed bugs are most active during the night, residents may not recognize an infestation until it has significantly escalated. Implementing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, which includes active participation from residents and building staff has shown to enhance control efforts.

Signs of Bed Bug Infestation
- Customer Complaints – Many people may complain about being bitten in bed or whilst staying in a hotel or guest house. Bed bug bite marks may be seen on most parts of the body. Note that bed bug bite marks may take several hours to develop.
- Bed bug sightings – Bedbugs can be visually seen by a naked eye in crevices, bedding and furniture. Where a Bed Bug infestation is suspected, bed clothing should be pulled back and the sheets, mattresses and headboards checked.
- Excreta marks – Bed bugs can leave dark, circular excreta marks that can be seen on sheets, headboards and bed legs. These marks are produced by the adult bedbug and nymphs excreting much of the liquid portion of the blood meal they have just taken.

Methods of Bed Bug Control
Methods of Bed Bug Control
GSG Pest Control provides an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach, which involves a combination of carefully designed practices that include monitoring for early detection of pest populations, a combination of chemical and nonchemical treatment, and evaluating results (including post-treatment monitoring). Traditional IPM practices, developed primarily for agricultural use, have not received unanimous support for bed bug control, as agriculture may tolerate low-level infestation, whereas any bed bug presence is unacceptable in homes. In the case of systemic infestations, common in multiple-occupancy buildings and apartment complexes, integrated pest management practices have proven to be the most effective solution to address bed bug problems.
There is a growing consensus and need for early detection and post-treatment monitoring products. However, visual inspections can be time-consuming and require specialized training, making effective bed bug control both resource-intensive and costly.
GSG Pest Control is a specialist in controlling bed bugs and provides extensive expertise in effective bed bug control, identification, treatment strategies, and prevention techniques. For more information, call 01424 255 882 or email: [email protected]

Cost of Pest Control
The cost of pest control services is a common concern for many homeowners and business owners seeking professional assistance to eliminate pests from their properties. Several factors influence the pricing of pest control, making it difficult to provide an accurate quote online.
How much does pest control cost?
Here are the key factors that contribute to the overall cost of treating a pest infestation:
Size of infestation – The extent and severity of the pest infestation affect the service cost. For instance, treating a large, established bed bug infestation will take more time and resources, resulting in a higher price compared to a small, contained issue that can be resolved quickly.
Type of pest – The specific type of pest infesting your property also impacts the pricing. The cost of eliminating cockroaches will differ from the cost of treating a rodent problem, as different solutions and approaches are required for each pest.
Type of treatment – The treatment method needed for pest elimination correlates with the overall service cost. For example, using insecticide sprays to control moths is different from employing heat treatment. The complexity and method of treatment will be reflected in the pricing. Moreover, the costs for preventative pest control are generally different from those for corrective or reactive treatments.
Number of treatments – Some pests may require multiple treatments for effective control, affecting overall pricing. For example, treating a wasp nest typically costs less than a rat treatment, as eliminating a rat infestation usually necessitates several visits from our professional pest controllers to ensure the pest is completely removed.
Size of property – The dimensions of the property are also a factor in determining pest control costs. Larger properties require more time and effort to effectively treat pest problems, which will influence the overall treatment cost to remove pests.
The size of the property plays a part in the cost of a pest control service. The larger the property the more time is required to successfully treat a pest problem. This will affect the cost of the treatment required to remove the pest.
