Bees are essential organisms that significantly contribute to both ecosystems and agricultural production. As members of the order Hymenoptera, these insects are primarily recognized for their role in pollination, as well as for their production of honey and wax. There exist over 20,000 species of bees globally, each of which plays a unique role in promoting biodiversity. Bees are social insects forming complex colonies in the wild. Bee colonies can survive for several fears and overwinter (as adults) using stored honey as food. One queen lays eggs, with many thousands of sterile female workers, male short lived. Bees can sting but, in the UK, only if threatened. Some bee strains worldwide are more aggressive than the UK strains and can sting with less provocation.

Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

The Honey bee is now cosmopolitan, having been spread by commerce throughout the world due to its value as a source of honey, a unique substance only obtained from bees. Beeswax is also a useful commodity.

Honey Bees exist in the wild but many colonies are ‘owned’ by keepers who provide shelter (hives), some protection and assist in the control of pests and diseases.

Among the various species, the honeybee (Apis mellifera) is particularly notable. Honeybee colonies are characterized by a sophisticated social structure, typically comprising a single queen, numerous worker bees, and drones. The queen’s primary function is reproduction, whereas worker bees undertake various responsibilities, including foraging for nectar and pollen, nurturing the young, and maintaining the hive environment. Drones have a singular role, which is to mate with the queen.

The pollination process facilitated by bees is indispensable. During their foraging activities for nectar, bees inadvertently transfer pollen between flowers, thereby enabling the reproduction of numerous plant species, including a wide array of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Research indicates that one out of every three bites of food consumed by humans is a direct consequence of bee pollination. This underscores the critical importance of bees in maintaining food security and ecosystem health.

In addition to their ecological impact, honeybees are also notable for producing honey, a natural sweetener that has been cherished across various cultures for millennia. Honey is recognized not only for its unique flavor but also for its various health benefits, including antibacterial properties and antioxidant content. The phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has prompted widespread concern regarding food security and biodiversity preservation. Protective measures aimed at conserving bee populations include the establishment of pollinator-friendly habitats, the reduction of pesticide usage, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

Both bee workers and queens can sting, using their modified ovipositors to inject a complex venom which is different in composition to that of wasps. The sting of worker bees is barbed and cannot be retracted by the bee once pushed into skin. If the bee is pulled or brushed away the sting remains, killing the bee but leaving the sting and the associated poison sac which can continue pump the venom for some time unless carefully removed.

Swarms can be threatening to the public but swarming bees are unlikely to sting in the early stages unless seriously provoked. Beekeepers accept stings as part of the job despite taking precautions, but it is less likely for members of the public to be stung by bees.

Extreme reactions to bee venom, as described above are very rare and only occur in a very few susceptible individuals after they have been sensitised a first bee sting on an earlier occasion. Wasp and bee venom is different in comparison so sensitivity to one does not necessarily imply sensitivity to the other.

It is important to avoid being stung by bees altogether if at all possible and to be aware if the reaction to bee stings become more acute. Medical advice should be sought if increasing sensitisation occurs.

Control of non-harmful Bees

Bees should not be killed or harmed without justifiable reason or through unapproved use of pesticides. For example, the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 regulates the use of some crop sprays such that those pesticides liable to harm bees must not be used when crops such as oilseed rape are in flower.

Every effort should be made to avoid carrying out control treatments against non pest wasp species and bees, because of their strongly beneficial role as pollinators and predators of garden pests.

In the public health field, insecticides such as bendiocarb may be used to kill ‘wild’ bees where there is justifiable reason but only as a last resort.

Where swarms escape and form a cluster, the first course of action should be to contact a local beekeeper or beekeepers’ association and ask if the swarm can be collected. Only in extreme cases where the risk of stinging is high or there is a risk to health should chemical control be considered.

If bees form colonies inside chimney voids or other inaccessible areas and their presence is likely to cause serious problems or be a risk to health, then chemical control measures may be used. However, if a colony has produced honey before it is killed, care must be taken to seal the void and so prevent wild bees or nearby ‘owned’ bees from robbing the honey. If robbing bees succumb to a residual insecticide in this way, this could contravene the Control of Pesticides Regulations and prosecution could result.
