Cockroach Group Characteristics and General Information
The order Dictyoptera introduces cockroaches and praying mantises; members of the group are found worldwide, in forests and fields, heath and moorlands, and some cockroach species are commonly associated with man’s habitation. There is a strongly suspected linking with disease transmission in the “indoor” species of cockroaches, and a general public distaste over their presence in housing, restaurants, kitchens and hotels.
The cockroaches group follows an incomplete metamorphosis. The female insect produces egg cases containing a variable number of eggs that hatch into nymphs, closely resembling the much larger adults. All nymphal stages, and adults, are omnivorous, need a supply of drinking water or foods of high-water content, and groom themselves to remove dust and dirt. They are all nocturnally active and scavenge over wide areas.
Cockroach Species included: –
- Oriental Cockroach ( Blatta orientalis)
- Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa)
- German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)
- Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae)
- American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
How Cockroaches affect Humans
Cockroaches are known to carry and spread various human disease organisms. Their habit of walking over and feeding on putrefying waste materials, drinking at unsavoury water supplies, and freely walking over food preparation areas, cutlery and crockery, and human foods in their search for food enables them to spread many disease organisms. Although there is no clear-cut evidence to implicate cockroaches with disease outbreaks, some of the disease organisms which cockroaches have been found carrying are: –
- Salmonella (Food poisoning)
- Gastro-enteritis (Escherichia coli)
- Tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis)
- Human and dog hookworms (Ancylostoma sp.)
- Amoebic dysentery (Entamoeba histolytica)
- Tapeworms (Taenia sp.)
In addition to this obvious problem, there is the added factor of human revulsion at the thought and sight of large numbers of cockroaches appearing unexpectedly when darkened kitchen and other areas are illuminated suddenly at night. The rapid scurrying and running action of cockroaches is upsetting, and the presence of so many insects may not even have been suspected by the owners or occupiers of the premises.

Evidence of Cockroach Infestation
Cockroaches will present signs to indicate their presence in an area and these include: –
- Cockroach marks – liquid excreta produced by cockroaches when water is readily available. The marks are usually brown, irregular in shape, often in the form of streaks and usually much larger than the circular marks left by the housefly. They tend to be denser near cockroach harbourages.
- Egg cases (ootheca) – the empty ootheca of German cockroaches are often hidden in harbourages. Unhatched ootheca are rarely found since these are carried by the female until shortly before hatching.
- Faecal pellets – minute cylindrical pellets less than 2 mm long and usually brown or black in colour. Found on horizontal surfaces and at wall-floor junctions where cockroaches run.
- Live insects – live or recently dead adults or nymphs trapped on insect detectors may help to provide clues as to the approximate location cockroach infestation, particularly German cockroach which rarely roams far from its harbourage. Careful inspection of favoured harbourages at night-time will better reveal the extent of infestations. Actual sightings during day are only likely if the infestation is large or harbourage has just been disturbed.
- Cast nymphal skins – light and easily blown about, they may be found anywhere but usually near harbourages.
- Smell – normally only detectable very close to a harbourage, the smell of a cockroach infestation is both lingering and unpleasant.

Cockroach Control Methods
Cockroach Survey
A systematic, integrated approach to cockroach control is recommended. Firstly, the extent and degree of the infestation should be determined using sticky traps or other monitoring devices, and the species of cockroach confirmed by specialist identification. The appropriate cockroach control treatment should then be started at the periphery of the infested area, working inwards towards the source of infestation.
Most cockroach treatments will rely on the use of bait treatments. Effectiveness will be increased by good hygienic practices, especially the removal of food residues and general cleaning of surfaces to be treated. Unsound surfaces (e.g. broken tiles) should be made good, and any possible cockroach harbourage sealed with plaster, mastic or other suitable fillers.
Baits
Baits are best applied to known cockroach harbourages as gel or flowable powders. Baits may contain fipronil, hydramethylnon, imidacloprid or abamectin, all stomach poisons with some having a small degree of contact action as well. Some also exhibit a cascade effect where poisoned cockroaches are consumed by others and the toxic effect is passed on.
Residual spray formulations
These are less used following the introduction of baits. They can still be used to apply to areas on the periphery of infestations so that emigrating individuals may be controlled. Residual spray formulations generally contain organophosphorus, carbamate or photo-stable pyrethroid insecticides. Before baits were introduced some initial problems concerning insecticide resistant strains of German cockroaches were experienced in the UK.
Dust formulations
These are best applied to generally inaccessible areas, including ducting systems and dead spaces. Most are low concentration organophosphorus, carbamate-based formulations. Silica gel may also be used in such situations.
Space spray formulations
These will usually be formulated to deliver small aerosol or mist particles of pyrethroid (non-photo-stable) insecticide. They are unlikely, on their own, to achieve control of cockroach infestation but may be useful in detection by flushing insects from harbourages, although they are generally less effective against the oriental cockroach than against the German cockroach.

Cost of Pest Control
The cost of pest control services is a common concern for many homeowners and business owners seeking professional assistance to eliminate pests from their properties. Several factors influence the pricing of pest control, making it difficult to provide an accurate quote online.
How much does pest control cost?
Here are the key factors that contribute to the overall cost of treating a pest infestation:
Size of infestation – The extent and severity of the pest infestation affect the service cost. For instance, treating a large, established bed bug infestation will take more time and resources, resulting in a higher price compared to a small, contained issue that can be resolved quickly.
Type of pest – The specific type of pest infesting your property also impacts the pricing. The cost of eliminating cockroaches will differ from the cost of treating a rodent problem, as different solutions and approaches are required for each pest.
Type of treatment – The treatment method needed for pest elimination correlates with the overall service cost. For example, using insecticide sprays to control moths is different from employing heat treatment. The complexity and method of treatment will be reflected in the pricing. Moreover, the costs for preventative pest control are generally different from those for corrective or reactive treatments.
Number of treatments – Some pests may require multiple treatments for effective control, affecting overall pricing. For example, treating a wasp nest typically costs less than a rat treatment, as eliminating a rat infestation usually necessitates several visits from our professional pest controllers to ensure the pest is completely removed.
Size of property – The dimensions of the property are also a factor in determining pest control costs. Larger properties require more time and effort to effectively treat pest problems, which will influence the overall treatment cost to remove pests.
The size of the property plays a part in the cost of a pest control service. The larger the property the more time is required to successfully treat a pest problem. This will affect the cost of the treatment required to remove the pest.
