Dog Flea and Cat Flea Eradication and Control Solutions

The human flea and the Cat flea have long been established worldwide, and it is difficult, if not impossible, to be sure of their origin. They are widespread throughout Britain, and the cat flea is by far the commonest of the flea species that come in contact with man, and despite its name, it is also found on dogs. The adult flea is an ectoparasite of humans but is also commonly found on some animals, such as Badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, Pigs, and frequently occurs in great numbers in piggeries. Fleas are parasitic as adults. Larvae live on the floor or in the bedding of the host, feeding mainly on faeces (droppings) of adult fleas.

Common Flea Species in the UK Include: –

Flea Impact on Humans

Irritation caused by Flea bites. Many flea species are known to be vectors of human diseases. Cat fleas are not implicated in disease transmission in the UK. The Dog Flea is the intermediate host of a tapeworm. The best-known example is the spread of plague by the Oriental Rat Flea.

Human fleas seem much more likely to be a source of irritation in 20th-century Britain. Persistent attacks can result in desensitisation, and there are many examples of families moving around housing estates, taking fleas with them but being unaware of the predations of their “pets”. On the other hand, their new neighbours may soon become aware of the presence of fleas, causing irritation and loss of sleep. The irritation is caused by the adult fleas and seems to be a reaction to the saliva injected into the host’s skin to prevent the blood from clotting during feeding.

Signs of Flea Infestation

  • Live adult Flea sightings
  • Reports of bite marks on legs and other parts of the body
  • Skin irritations on both pets and humans.
